It's summer in LA, and there are few things better than a fast car, good company, and a great burger. On this particular Friday night, our good friends the Gillins took us to Bob's Big Boy, a classic LA burger joint that hosts a classic car show each Friday night. We cruised over to Burbank in their high tuned Bel Aires, one with about 450 hp and the other with around 750hp. Yes, you read that right, 750 horses!!
Lance and Austin are both leaving to serve missions, Lance to Piura Peru and Austin to Santo Domingo Dominican Republic, and per tradition, the Gillins took them and their families to Bob's in their sick cars. They picked us up, and as we drove into the parking lot where the weekly car show was happening, all eyes were on our car, and rightly so, it is quite the specimen, complete with blower and impeccable paint job; the engine noise alone is enough to draw plenty of attention.
After eating our famous Big Boy burgers, we wandered the parking lot to see the classic cars. I loved this sunshine yellow bronco.
Another favorite was this 58 Rolls Royce, beautiful in spotless white. Lance and Austin liked it too.
I spotted this white British Triumph, and as I drooled over it's petite and well-designed lines, my Dad arrived by my side and denounced its mechanical insides. Classic. My Mom and I were laughing so hard, my Dad declared it had the worst transmission ever made and other pathetic parts, deeming it utterly worthless in any other light than being pretty to look at.
This summer has been really valuable to me, because I have been able to spend quality time with Lance, who I never really had hung out with before. Yes, he is my brother, but because of timing with school and study abroads and the mission, we were never around the house at the same time, and finally we have reached that pleasant age where we can finally be friends. Naturally, now that I love having him around, he'll leave for two years!
On the way home from Bob's, Larry put his foot down and the car practically lifted off the ground. I have never gone so fast in my life in a car, I couldn't breathe, there was so much g-force pressing on my chest. Then once I could breathe again, the involuntary laugh came out. It was all Larry could do to keep the car on the road, with so much horsepower wanting to let loose. Unreal.
