Aesthetic Edification

I seem to be pulled by some mystical force inside me, directly to the art galleries here in the district. Today, Thursday, I went directly to the Modern Art Gallery and explored it from the bottom floor to the top. My favorite were the contemporary pieces on the bottom floor, most of which were from the 40's to 70's, including everyone from Pollock, to Matisse, Rothko, and Calder. I particularly enjoyed the Cut-Outs by Matisse. He created this style of work when he lived in Southern France and was recovering from an operation, so painting/drawing was difficult. Turning the difficulty into a positive, he instructed his assistant to cover tons of paper with gouache and then he took scissors to the pieces and created his cut-outs. They are, in my mind, southern french colors and seem to emanate cheeriness. Here is one of his pieces:

Also on the lower floor, I took a liking to this painting, and I'm sure you'll all scratch and wonder why!! I would love if this were in my kitchen, that I will have some day, with a zinc topped table and an industrial island.

I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in the world of modern art as I perused the selections, and though some people find it hard to appreciate I find it refreshing and simply approaching the medium from a different angle. I always feel particularly connected to the Rothko pieces, and I find that they describe phases of life and how there are so many elements and feelings that interact throughout our human experience.

  1. Isn't Rothko the man! I toad agree, they are just so striking! I'm glad there are a few of his pieces at LACMA to see or I would be super jels over here!

K, YOU! haha!! The cake stands! YOU HAVE to get a print of that! Pin it up in your kitchen now! Haley, if you were art - voila!
