Oh DC and all your goodness

Tonight Tay and I attended a FotoWeek event at the Navy memorial down on Pennsylvania Avenue. Two world-renowned photojournalists gave presentations of their work. Photography has always been one of my very favorite mediums of expression. It amazes me the way a picture can change the way you see something. An image through a lens is no longer the same thing you see through your eyes but an expression of art. David Burnett, the first to speak, has a career ranging from Vietnam to the Beijing olympics. His campaign shots of Obama and McCain were amazing. He has discovered obscure cameras that opened new doors for him. The other photojournalist, Eugene Richards drew his subject matter from his origins as a social worker. His was a bit depressing, to be honest, looking at death, drugs, and poverty. But it made you think and portrayed real scenes. One of their main points was that you don't have to travel to exotic places to get incredible, moving pictures. Photograph your life. The funny thing is I always end up with an inordinate amount of pictures of Taylor. Maybe because he's always like, here take a picture of me. I'm just not as enthusiastic about photographs of myself.
This is why I love DC. There are incredible events like this FotoWeek happening all the time if you pay attention. Did I mention they are mostly free? And sometimes they feed you. I don't know what it is about BYU students and free food, it's like a strange magnetism. So we go.

  1. Yeah it's hard to get good photos of yourself, which is why you need to make the attempt more often! Especially with someone like Taylor who is willing to take and retake if need be.

In Jordan I bought a pirated copy of National Georgraphic's photo documentary showing 50 years of their best photos. We should watch it when you get back!

  3. Love it! So glad you've started a blog. I love hearing your opinions and what you are up to. I will check it often.

You take some great photographs, don't sell yourself short. Why do you think Tay has such great pictures of himself, because you take them. I think you could totally get into photography if you wanted to.

Speaking of free food, we should got to 2Amy's on saturday. Good luck hitting up the museums.

  4. Haley,
This is so rad! Did you get the font for pure royalty on dafont.com? I love your thankful list, I'm thankful for all of those things except for pencil skirts, I don't know what those are. Now I can see what crazy things you guys do up in DC, keep posting stuff! It's kind of like a scrapbook, but online.
